June 15, 2023 | MainstreamCanadian.ca – Cricket was played in Canada as early as the 1800s. The first recorded cricket match took place in Montreal in 1785, and the game kept gaining popularity in major Canadian cities including Montreal, Toronto, and Hamilton.
Canada participated in international cricket tournaments and matches, primarily against the United States and England. In 1880, a Canadian team toured England and played several matches against county sides. Canada also played in the ICC Intercontinental Cup, an international cricket tournament for Associate members.
In modern era, Canada has invested in the development of cricket infrastructure across the country. Several cricket stadiums have been built, and more recently the City of Brampton in the province of Ontario is gaining significant attention.
The mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, is very active when it comes to showcasing the city’s cricketing infrastructure and its vision of becoming the “Cricket Capital of North America”.
Mayor Brown took to Twitter today and updated his followers that the City Council approved enhancements to Brampton’s cricket infrastructure reaffirming the City’s vision of being the Cricket Capital of North America.
He further added, “New additions to Brampton’s cricket facilities include: Two shade structures, four-lane batting cage and power access at Kwality Sweets Cricket Pitch at Andrew McCandless Park, A four-lane batting cage at Save Max Sports Centre”
The City of Brampton is also the host and sponsor to GT20, North America’s first-ever major T20 tournament aimed at popularising and developing the game of cricket. The tournament provides a platform not only to local Canadian cricketers but also to the other associate nation cricketers to share the field with legends.
Mayor Brown was recently in Pakistan where he met the international cricket star Shahid Afridi.
