On Sunday, Ontario is reporting 1,042 new COVID-19 cases, the daily highest count to date since the pandemic began. Sunday’s case count broke the record for most cases on Saturday when 978 cases were reported. This also surpasses Friday, October 9’s record of 939 cases.
The province has also reported seven more deaths, while 736 more cases are now resolved. Ontario’s network of community, commercial and hospital labs processed nearly 38,800 test samples since its last update, the Health Ministry says.
“Locally, there are 309 new cases in Toronto, 289 in Peel, 117 in York Region, 80 in Ottawa and 52 in Durham. There are 736 more resolved cases,” Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted on Sunday.
According to a statement from Dr. Theresa Tam, the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada, on Saturday, October 24, 2020, the latest national-level data indicate daily averages of 2,488 new cases (Oct 16-22) and 74,719 people tested, with 3.1% testing positive (Oct 11-17). Outbreaks continue to contribute to COVID-19 spread in Canada.
Dr. Tam had further noted on Saturday, “The number of people experiencing severe illness continues to increase. Provincial and territorial data, indicate that an average of 1,010 people with COVID-19 were being treated in Canadian hospitals each day during the most recent 7-day period (Oct 16-22), including 209 of whom were being treated in intensive care units.”
As of October 23 at 10:30 a.m., there are now 514 Schools that have reported COVID-19 cases in Ontario with a cumulative case count of 1,698. On Saturday, the most recent data on the evolution of COVID-19 in Québec show 1,009 new cases, bringing the total number of people infected to 99,235.
Manitoba reported a total of 163 new infections on Friday, most concentrated in Winnipeg.
In British Columbia, health officials announced 223 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday. Seventy-five people are in hospital, with 24 in intensive care.
Nova Scotia reported no new cases of COVID-19 on Friday.
Canada added 2,227 new cases yesterday, bringing the total case count to 213,959 and 9,922 total deaths.
