On Friday, Ontario is reporting 148 new COVID-19 infections, continuing the trend of an alarming uptick in infections, especially in the Peel Region of the province. The Ministry of Health says that there were 148 new cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus confirmed over the last 24 hours, including 72 in Peel Region.
It is the second time in a week that the province has reported 148 cases in a single 24-hour period. Previously, the number of new infections hadn’t been that high since July 24.
“Ontario is reporting 148 cases of #COVID19 as the province processed over 28,500 tests. Peel is reporting 72 new cases, with 41 in Toronto and 13 in Ottawa. Once again, every other public health unit is reporting five or fewer cases, with 12 units reporting no new cases“, the Health Minister, Christine Elliot, stated in her tweet today.
Social media commentators have been expressing concerns with the rising numbers in the Peel Region, specifically the city of Brampton which is registering the majority of cases in Peel. People are suggesting strict measures and suggesting, “Time to put Peel back into Stage 2”.

Also, 1 new death has occurred in the last 24 hours, but the total remains at 5,767 due to the withdrawal of one death that the investigation has shown was not attributable to COVID-19. The number of hospitalizations increased by 2 compared to the previous day, for a cumulative total of 102.
Across the globe, the US (+44,507), Brazil (44,728) and India continue to see an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. Pakistan reported 424 new cases yesterday compared to its neighbour India where 84,156 new cases were registered. A country with population similar to India is China, where the first cases of the virus were discovered, reported 11 new cases yesterday.
